Greek Science
Ptolemy was an astronomer, geographer, and mathematician. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt during 100 AD and died during 168 ad in the same area. He thought that the Earth was in the center of the universe but he was wrong for 1,400 years.
Euclid created a geometry text and he even had evidence to support it. His work is still the base of geometry . He was born in Alexandria Egypt and was a teacher there too. He also influenced Isaac Newton, and many other people we know well today.
These two scientists can connect to today because we use exactly the same things as them, but we have the correct answer to Ptolemy’s wrong answer. Earth is not in the center, it is actually the third planet from the sun, in the solar system, in the milky way, and in space. Although many people were not correct in their science and technology research, we have continued their research and found the correct answers. So in the end our research and new answers to new problems and questions were started from the greek scientists. Euclid also influenced Isaac Newton.
Eratosthenes was a Greek scientist and astronomer. He found a way to estimate the circumference on the Earth. Also he calculated the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Finally he invented the leap day.
Hypatia was an astronomer and the first female astronomer. She was born in Alexandria, Egypt and died in 415 A.D. Hypatia wrote about the works of Ptolemy and Euclid. Also she was the leader of a philosophical movement based on the works of Plato. Later she became a symbol math and science. Also she became the world's leading mathematician and scientist of her time. Even though she died a long time ago her legacy still lives on today.
Aristarchus was a Greek scientist who was born on the Greek island of Samos. He spent most of his life working at the Library of Alexandria. He studied the relationship of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Aristarchus was a very successful scientist and astronomer. He found out that the earth went around the sun by looking at the shadow of the earth on the moon during an eclipse . He used Euclid's geometric theories, and his own to do his calculations. Also Aristarchus calculated the size of the Sun, but his calculations were off by a lot. Finally Aristarchus can connect to today because without all of his amazing discoveries we might not of had these findings today and we might have even not invented much of the technology that we have today.
